The Apple AirTag search tracker helped the Portland police detain an armed robber who unknowingly stole a backpack with a beacon attached to it.
Last Thursday, May 19, an armed man broke into one of Portland’s stores and ordered an employee to give him all the money from the cash register, as well as a personal smartphone and wallet.
The police were able to track the phone at the Embassy Suites hotel and use the cameras to identify the perpetrator. Later that day, hotel security contacted the police and reported that the suspect had returned to his room.
The authorities failed to detain the suspect – he escaped down the fire escape, after breaking into one of the rooms, from where he stole valuables and a backpack with an AirTag tracker attached.
The owner of the backpack immediately contacted the police and helped track down the AirTag in north Portland. A few hours later, the perpetrator was caught. He was charged with second-degree robbery and first-degree burglary.
