A Microsoft subscription is very convenient for gamers as it gives access to a huge library of games. Some big titles get there right on the day of release. Xbox Game Pass offers great value for money without forcing players to spend a lot of money.
However, not everyone agrees with this model of content distribution. Among them is former Xbox chief executive Ed Freese. He believes that Game Pass is stopping a lot of people from buying games.
We have to be careful not to create the same system in the gaming business. I mean these markets are much more fragile than people think.
Freese compared the service to Spotify, which “literally cut the music business’ annual revenue in half.” The former chief executive admits that such a model is extremely convenient for users, but it only hurts the industry.
It’s funny that this contradicts what some developers say about how much interest in their games has grown since they were added to Game Pass.
