Eidos Montréal, best known for the Deus Ex series and the more recent Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, almost came close to developing Final Fantasy 15, the studio’s former art director Jonathan Jacque-Belletête explained in an interview with TrueAchievements .
Rumors are true – Eidos Montréal almost developed Final Fantasy 15
“Eidos Montréal brought Deus Ex back. I was the art director on Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Then I was the executive director on Mankind Divided. Then we tried to make Final Fantasy 15 (buy now ) too developed. Then they decided to bring it back to Japan – which I think was a big mistake, but it’s still the truth. Our game was really, really cool.”
In fact, there have been rumors in the past about this project by the developer studio. YouTuber Super Bunnyhop released a video in 2018 centered on the Eidos Montréal Final Fantasy. According to the YouTuber, the studio had already developed a few rudimentary designs for the game, and their version of the title would have been a “space opera” with some kind of love triangle.
Jacque-Belletête didn’t confirm any of the YouTuber’s statements in his interview, so of course we don’t know if that would have happened, but a space opera would be really cool.
A Final Fantasy by Eidos Montréal will probably never become reality, because together with Tomb Rader and Deus Ex, Square Enix recently sold the Canadian development studio to Embracer Group. But at least we will soon receive an announcement for the second part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
