Actor Willem Dafoe, thanks to an excerpt from the movie “Spider-Man”, became the hero of the meme “You know, I’m something of a scientist myself”, brought the meme to life. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee awarded Defoe an honorary Doctor of Science degree.
This university was Defoe’s alma mater: the actor studied at the acting department for some time, but then was expelled due to poor performance. As Defoe himself recalled in a thank-you speech, for the sake of studying he was forced to work two jobs, did not have time for anything and flunked his exams.
The lack of specialized education did not prevent Willem Dafoe from building a successful acting career. Almost 50 years after Defoe’s expulsion, the university decided to celebrate the actor’s success.
In his acceptance speech, Defoe noted that Milwaukee was still able to launch his acting career. After participating in the productions of the theater department, the expelled actor was able to get a job in the troupe of the experimental theater Theater X, and a few years later he got to the cinema.
