Earlier this week, the Final Fantasy 7 25th Anniversary Stream revealed the title and release window for Final Fantasy 7 Remake 2, now titled Rebirth. It’s important to note that the stream also said that the remake would be in three parts, and revealed that a third part is also in development and already has a title, but won’t be announced just yet.
This has led Final Fantasy fans to start trying to predict what the third game will be called based on the clues we already have and the established pattern from the current line of Final Fantasy 7 projects. The most important rule is that it must start with ” Re”, given that both Remake and Rebirth, and even the remastered Crisis Core – Reunion, set a clear theme.
Final Fantasy fan and translator aitaikiomochi has several different theories about what the title might be, including “Redemption, Requiem, Rewritten, Resolution and Revolution” – all words start with “Re” and most of them follow the same theme.
She delves into her theory by looking at the Japanese pun for the title, explaining, “Thinking about it further, I think a title that would make a lot of sense (including the Japanese pun) is: Final Fantasy VII Return. リターン (ターン = turn the clock? return the chronology?) I guess it should be short to be styled the same way as the first 2 titles.”
Another good theory from aitaikiomochi is Rewrite: “Another possible short English word that can also have a double meaning in Japanese katakana is “Rewrite” リライト (rewrite or re-light). “Although it’s a little too similar to Kingdom Hearts, it’s just a guess.”
Other suggested titles include Rebuild. Revive, Reverse and Remember. Almost every word that begins with those two letters has been suggested, and frankly, they all might be right. Most of them base the title both on the fact that it has to start a certain way, and on the assumption that some spoiler events from the original game will still happen to one of the characters and presumably be eliminated by the main cast.
