Good sound in the smallest space? With the Ray, Sonos presents its most space-saving soundbar model to date. How much power is in the speaker bar? And is it also suitable for demanding players?
The right sound makes a good game or a gripping film even better. We all love it when the explosions sweep our ears and we can listen intently to the words of the protagonists. Strong acoustics are simply a must for an untroubled entertainment experience.
The sound experts at Sonos are now delivering the smallest unit in their portfolio with the Ray soundbar. For around CHF 300 you can get juicy stereo sound and state-of-the-art app support. But is the Sonos Ray also worth buying for gamers?
Sonos Ray: That’s in it!
The Sonos Ray comes in a simple but beautifully designed box. Very nice: The manufacturer largely avoids the use of plastic and instead uses paper as an insulating and protective material. The soundbar itself comes in a sealed cloth pouch.
In addition to the soundbar, you will find a quick start guide, an optical cable that is around 1 m long and a power cable that is around 2 m long. Since the Ray should be placed centrally below the television anyway, the short optical line is bearable in this case. The model is available in the colors white and black.
Very important: The Sonos Ray does not need a remote control. In order to be able to use all functions, you need a smartphone and the appropriate app.
The Sonos Ray is intended as a central audio unit in front of or under the home TV. The stereo speaker bar is correspondingly small and handy. With a height of 71 mm, it fits easily under the television and, thanks to a width of 559 mm and a depth of only 95 mm, it can even be placed on narrow TV furniture. Of course, you also have the option of screwing the device, which weighs almost 2 kg, to the wall.
Two tweeters and two woofers as well as four class D digital amplifiers were installed inside the box. A bass reflex system, which is also supposed to reproduce low frequencies with little noise and background noise, provides the necessary emphasis.
On the back there are only a few connection options apart from the power connection. So you can connect the Sonos Ray directly to your router via Ethernet cable. Alternatively, the soundbar also has WiFi connectivity. The connection to the Sonos app is via Bluetooth. Communication with the TV, on the other hand, runs via the optical connection. The Sonos Ray is not a Bluetooth speaker.
