There are countless video game franchises that can be played on consoles, PCs, handhelds, mobile devices, virtual reality headsets, etc. However, there are some video game franchises that stand out from the rest as some of the most popular in the industry. A new study analyzed Google Trends data to determine the most popular video game franchises in each state.
The study was conducted by Yahtzee Craze and looked at the most popular franchises in each state. The study found that Star Wars was the most popular franchise in seven states. Super Mario came in second, becoming the most popular game in the five states, while Pokémon and Spider-Man tied for third place.
Other major gaming franchises featured on the list include Call of Duty and Resident Evil, both of which have ranked #1 in three states. Various other video game franchises also feature on the list, with Madden NFL and Warhammer 40,000 being the most popular in two states, with the rest spread across one state each.

While Google Trends can give you a good idea of what fans are interested in, one could argue that it would make more sense to look at the sales data. It can also be noted that comparing franchises such as Star Wars and Spider-Man to other video games is not necessarily fair. After all, Star Wars is a movie franchise first and foremost, and Spider-Man is a comic book franchise. It would be interesting to see what the results would have been if they had been removed, with the study solely focused on pure video game franchises.
Otherwise, there aren’t many surprises on the list. Call of Duty, Pokemon, Resident Evil, and Super Mario are some of the longest-running and most popular video game franchises of all time, so it only makes sense that they would appear frequently on a list like this.
