Star Wars fans have noticed that the actor looks a little different even when he first appeared on the show. Although it was just a close-up of Darth Vader without the heavily scarred suit, it was immediately clear that this was not the Christensen that viewers had become attached to in Episodes II and III. But it turned out that the change was intentional.
In an interview with Fatherly magazine, Christensen talked about how important it was for him to appear not only in the scenes with Darth Vader and Anakin without a helmet, but also in the character’s full iconic attire:
I think this process was very important for me. I needed to be that character again, physically. I just consumed as many calories as possible. I put on 25 or 30 kilos to fill out the Darth Vader suit.
Many have speculated that Christensen only appeared in flashbacks, and that Vader’s costumed appearances were performed by his doppelgänger. But it’s nice to hear that he’s fully committed to the cause. At least as long as filming continued.
The actor continued with a laugh.
I try to avoid “daddy’s body”. And I tried to keep Vader’s body after we were done. But to be honest, I’m practically back to my old diet. After that, I kind of freaked out.
