L’video game industry has sided against the decision of the US Supreme Court with conservative traction to cancel the Roe vs Wade ruling which made it mandatory to guarantee the right to abortion across the nation. Now the individual federal states will be able to make autonomous laws, canceling it, as in fact has already happened.
The fact is too serious and important for companies that often have thousands of employees, including many women, not to take a stand. In the past few hours we have seen many development studios take sides, today other positions have arrived, such as that of Bethesda And Niantic.
The first published a tweet stating that the possibility of choosing one’s own body and lifestyle is a human right, the second published a similar message, more focused on the health problems created by this decision and on the social inequality that will come to create, inviting everyone to sign the letter Don’t Ban Equality.
Microsoft has also officially stated that it will continue to support its employees in accessing care, including those related to abortion and gender affirmation, regardless of the state they live in. The protection has been extended to include travel expenses to more civilized states, where the right to abortion will still be guaranteed. Activision Blizzard has also made it known that it has extended its coverage for employees, and Electronic Arts is working to do the same.
Only Sony and Nintendo are missing. The first seems to have left the various studios free to take a stand, after the controversy arising from the words of President Jim Ryan on the issue, while Mario’s company is, as usual, reluctant to intervene on such matters.
