In the superhero series The Boys, a team of Karl Urban (Billy Butcher), Jack Quaid (Hugie), Tomer Capone (Frenchman) and Laz Alonso (Marvin) fight the superheroes. Everyone knows Urbana, Quaid and Alonso are quite famous, Tomer Capone is a dark horse.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor spoke about how he got into the Boys team, talked about working on the show and about his attitude to superheroics. Here are the most curious moments from Capone’s story.
In fact, Tomer is not French.. When meeting the fans of The Boys, they always try to speak French with the actor, but Capone does not understand anything – he is a native of Israel.
Capone became a Frenchman thanks to Eric Kripke’s mother, showrunner of The Boys. Tomer starred in Israeli TV series, Kripke’s mother watched one of them and told her son about the actor she liked. Kripke’s team searched for a suitable Frenchie for a long time and Tomer was immediately offered to audition.
Testing turned out to be dangerous. At some point, Tomer was asked to record another video; he was with a friend in Tel Aviv, so they decided to write the video right in the backyard. The scene was loud, the neighbors, excited by the screams, called the police.
It was a gun scene, I’m on camera, cursing in French, all that. And then a couple of IDF police officers with guns at the ready tumble into the courtyard and yell: “Put down your weapon, put down your weapon.” We froze, I almost crap myself. Such is the audition experience for Hollywood.
The Frenchman from the series is as talkative as in the comics: To stay true to the character, Capone writes out the lines of the hero from the comics and uses them in the series on occasion. But the actor vowed not to recreate action scenes.
I once tried, in the first season, when we fought with Mother’s Milk. He said, they say, I want to try something from the comics, and there [сцена описывалась как-то] type: “French jumps with spread fingers.” All in all, a great jump.
I did just that, fell on my butt and thought that a simple punch would probably be better.
Tomer can no longer watch superhero movies. Before working on The Boys, the actor considered the characters in spandex and with superpowers to be cool guys, but shooting in the series ruined everything. Now Tomer treats superheroes differently.
Now that I see superheroes on screen, I don’t buy it anymore. For the last ten years, everyone who has worked on superheroes has been trying to escape from reality.
And then I read The Boys and thought, “They took the genre and just turned it upside down.” They said: “Let’s see how superheroes behave in front of the mirror at the end of the working day. What are they really thinking about when they take off their spandex?”
The final episodes of the third season of The Boys will air on July 1 and 8. New tests await both Frenchie and superheroes.
