Have you ever played on your PC and wondered what it would be like to actually walk through the fantasy worlds of Night City in Cyberpunk or Los Santos in GTA V for yourself? Abandon the WASD keys or the controller and explore the world on your own? With the STEPL mobile app, this dream can be just around the corner.
In a recently posted video by solo developer STEPL, you can see a mysterious pair of legs move up and down in place and cause characters in Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V and Horizon: Forbidden West to start wandering around! With a controller in one hand, the right analog stick, and a phone in your pocket, the app looks like it lets you put yourself in the shoes of your favorite characters (unless it’s something like a racing game, of course).
Moving on to the YouTube video description, it looks like STEPL is intended as a training tool: “STEPL is a good training motivator if you play sitting for many hours instead of walking or forcing yourself to exercise. Put your phone in your pocket and as you step in place, your character will step forward too.” This is reflected in the official website, which advocates goals such as saving users time, helping motivate them to exercise, and helping people live longer.
All in all, it’s a cool app that’s obviously meant to be an exercise, but could be a great ingredient for a mystical dream of total immersion in a game that’s been stuck in players’ minds for decades.
