GM is trying to keep the Hummer family’s reputation for off-road capability even as it goes electric, and the so-called “crab gait” is only part of a specific arsenal. Air suspension in Extract Mode allows you to increase the ground clearance to an impressive 404 mm to overcome the most serious sections of the track with difficult terrain.
As explains Electric, owners of approximately one hundred electric vehicles of the Hummer EV family, which have already been shipped to customers, will gain access to the Extract Mode function through an over-the-air software update, only a few pickups and SUVs will require a visit to the company’s service for additional adjustment of the body height sensor. In the future, all produced SUVs equipped with adjustable air suspension will initially support Extract Mode.
In total, there are three suspension positions for electric vehicles of the Hummer EV family: Normal Mode (257 mm), Raised Mode (302 mm) and Extract Mode (404 mm). According to the manufacturer, Hummer EV will provide superior ground clearance over the Ford Raptor, Ram TRX, Bronco Raptor and Rivian R1T – the main competitors in the North American market. If in the first two positions the suspension retains articulation by 330 mm, then this value is not indicated for the highest Extract Mode. Most likely, the maximum ground clearance mode does not imply a long movement in this position and significantly increases the stiffness of the suspension. It is needed, first of all, to rescue the car from deep snow, mud, ruts, as well as driving over large stones at low speed.
Another characteristic feature of some electric pickups is the ability to turn around on the spot like a tank. To do this, the rotation of each of the four wheels must be controlled by a separate electric motor. Rivian and Mercedes-Benz are ready to offer such an opportunity for their off-road vehicles; if it goes into series, it may appear in Lordstown Motors and Tesla Cybertruck pickups.
