In the battle royale genre, many titles make use of classic shooter gameplay, such as Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and PUBG. However, there are also a few games that want to stand out from the crowd. These include Fall Guys, which recently received a free-to-play launch on the Epic Games Store, and the magic-based Spellbreak. Unfortunately, while the title was generally well received by players, Spellbreak will be discontinued early next year, as the development team explains in a blog post.
Spellbreak developers will continue to work on World of Warcraft: Dragonflight
Spellbreak was released in September 2020 as a free-to-play title for PC and consoles. Instead of various guns, players used certain gloves that gave them magical abilities. For example, the Ice Gauntlet was the equivalent of a sniper rifle, except that accurate players used an enchanted bow. The various elements could also be combined with each other to trigger powerful effects.
It’s quite a shame that a battle royale as unique as Spellbreak has to close its doors, but at least the studio behind the game already has plans for the future. According to GamesBeat, the entire development team will be taken on by Blizzard, where they will help develop the new World of Warcraft expansion, Dragonflight. The Spellbreak Studio is said to have been working with Blizzard since May this year.
World of Warcraft fans (buy now ) got a cause for concern recently because Blizzard started pre-ordering their new expansion before there was even an alpha phase or anything like that. Additionally, the new title is slated for release later this year, which is a bit early for some players. With the addition of the Spellbreak developers, Blizzard may have enough developers available to actually release Dragonflight this early without suffering any penalties.
