By 2035, Europe will have to stop selling new cars with internal combustion engines.
Agency Reuters shared fresh comments from Volkswagen CFO Arno Antlitz on the EU agreement reached to ban the sale of new ICE passenger cars and light commercial vans with the same type of power plant in the region from 2035. Some countries at the discussion stage tried to move this milestone until 2040, although the chances for slight indulgences still exist, because by 2026 the EU countries must decide whether hybrid cars fit into the adopted concept.

According to the financial director of Volkswagen, the adopted goal is achievable for this automaker, but the main problem on the way to it is not so much the need to build enterprises for the production of electric vehicles, but the lack of traction batteries and raw materials for them. Volkswagen is ready to stop sales of new ICE cars in Europe by 2035, but some manufacturers may not be able to do this. The allusion seems to be to Toyota Motor Corporation, which now surpasses Volkswagen in the number of cars sold annually, but is extremely slow to move to battery electric vehicles, desperately trying to market hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell cars.

The new concept adopted by the European Union does not yet have the status of a law, but after some clarifications it may well become one. Toyota is clearly not happy with such trends, and therefore is trying to lobby its interests not only in the domestic market of Japan, but also beyond its borders. The authorities of a united Europe aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
