Apple has officially announced that after the release of iPadOS 16, tablets can still be used as smart home hubs, but with a caveat: devices will not support the new Matter protocol.
An Apple spokesperson told The Verge that the company plans to introduce a “new standard for smart home devices” later this year. We are talking about the Matter protocol, which will provide better compatibility between smart home devices from different manufacturers.
Thus, with the release of iPadOS 16, all compatible iPad models can be used as a smart home hub without loss of functionality, but the tablet will not work with the Matter protocol. Therefore, the company recommends that users purchase HomePod speakers or Apple TV boxes – they are fully compatible with Matter devices.
