It is understandable: they eat “money”, but nobody really needs it.
Ubisoft releases a huge number of video games every year, so it is only natural that sooner or later the oldest projects have to be completely disconnected from the life support system, the operation of which is no longer even paid off by the games to which it is connected. Today on the Ubisoft website notification appeared that on September 1, the company will shut down servers supporting network functionality for fifteen games from previous years, including Splinter Cell Blacklist, Assassin’s Creed II, Anno 2070 and others.
Closing older game services will allow the company to free up resources for more modern titles, Ubisoft said. In all cases, turning off the servers will mean the game is completely cut off from multiplayer, the inability to connect an account, and also use network functions. In some cases, such as Assassin’s Creed 3 original release, Far Cry 3 and Driver San Francisco, you will lose access to additional content (DLC).

To say that Ubisoft’s decision was received extremely negatively by the public is an understatement. It’s important to remember that, despite their advanced age, many of the games affected by the upcoming outage still have valid user bases. And yes, hoisting a black flag with a skull and crossbones over your computer will not solve the problem: in some games, for example, in the same Anno 2070, network functionality is so strongly associated with the game that no hack can compensate for this.
