The American body in charge of the registration of patents has recently complied with the request made by Nintendo of renew the Donkey Kong brand. The new patent also includes important changes to the list of products and areas in which this now iconic IP can be used.
Unlike in the past, in fact, the representatives of the Kyoto company did not limit themselves to “passively” updating the brand of this historic IP but took the opportunity to extend its perimeter by adding new “intended uses” of the patent.
The update of the brand, in this case, guarantees Nintendo the right to exploit Donkey Kong’s intellectual property in an exclusive way to develop themed video games on the most disparate platforms and, last minute news, “downloadable programs for portable and electronic consoles”.
The extension of the brand to digital delivery games and downloadable apps for mobile systems and portable consoles suggests Nintendo’s intention to relaunch Donkey Kong’s IP on Switch and, why not, iOS and Android tablets and smartphones. The hope of the fans is obviously to witness as soon as possible the announcement of Donkey Kong for Nintendo Switch or, if nothing else, the arrival of reboots or remasters of the old Donkey Kong chapters on eShop. Wanting to launch into further speculations, nothing prevents us from dreaming of the return of Diddy Kong Racingthe beloved arcade racing spin-off launched in 1997 on the Nintendo 64 and revived by the Japanese company a decade later on the Nintendo DS.
