Video games have long been perceived as a form of modern art. And any art can be regarded as one of the elements of the so-called soft power – when the influence on the neighbors on the globe and their communities is carried out culturally, economically and diplomatically. This fact is well understood in the Kremlin, however, domestic tools of soft power today are criminally few, the consequences of which we are raking up today. The current situation needs to be changed, as part of the press conference dedicated to the start of the All-Russian competition “Start the Game” TASS Tatyana Matveeva, head of the Office of the President of the Russian Federation for the Development of Information and Communication Technologies and Communications Infrastructure, said.
According to Matveeva, computer games, due to the possibility of different semantic interpretations of the events covered in them, including historical, economic and cultural ones, are used to influence users, being, in fact, a tool of soft power.
According to Matveeva, one of the important tasks of the state is to protect citizens from destructive video game content, including with the help of the domestic gaming industry, which needs to be developed to a competitive level. Without training the personnel base, as Matveeva rightly explains, it is simply impossible to complete the task, so the relevance of the “Start the Game” competition is now more than ever high.

This is not the first signal from the Russian authorities that the country needs to take on video games. The other day, for example, the State Duma announced the need to create its own competitive game engine, since at the moment the domestic game industry is working with foreign-made software products, access to which can be blocked at any time.
