Several new patents from Sony Interactive Entertainment are causing a lot of conversation these days. One of the patents describes a kind of “what if?” feature for games that makes it clear to the player what the consequences of a different decision would have been.
Yesterday, Monday, we were able to tell you about a new patent filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment that describes the possibility of attaching all sorts of accessories, such as the DualShock 3 controller, the EyeToy camera, or the PlayStation Move controller, to modern hardware such as the PlayStation 5 to use.
Another Sony Interactive Entertainment patent covers a type of “what if?” feature for video games. Here, for example, players could watch a replay of your gameplay and see how a scene or story would unfold if they had made a different choice.
“The method involves providing an interface that identifies one or more what-if scenarios for previous gameplay,” the patent’s description reads.
The selection of “What if?” scenarios
“The one or more what-if scenarios selected for inclusion in the interface are based on processing the previous gameplay record by a machine learning model to identify what-if scenarios to the user , and options for what-if scenarios are provided in the interface,” the patent continues.
“The method includes allowing selection of at least one of the what-if scenarios from the options. The selection will tweak the metadata associated with recording previous gameplay. The method involves playing back the recording selected using the customized metadata to generate the alternate outcome of the previous game.”

In our opinion, this is an interesting feature, although it remains to be seen whether it will actually be implemented. After all, many of those submitted never reach series maturity.
