the operator US made known its ambition to be able to deliver coverage of the NOS Alive in 5G. She does so, according to her, to guarantee an immersive experience (even) from a distance for this festival that is finally back in 2022.

Firstly, to bring the emotions of NOS Alive to more people, NOS, in partnership with RTP, set up a robust 5G operation. All to convey the most outstanding moments of the festival.
More specifically, thanks to NOS’ 5G resources – network, equipment and technical teams. That is, not only will viewers be able to count on a broadcast in real time, but they will also have access to plans and images that were previously inaccessible. In summary, the essentials for a more immersive and exclusive experience.
5G networks at the service of the public at the NOS Alive 2022 festival
Thus, one of the areas where 5G will have a significant impact will be broadcasting. The introduction of new mobile technology at the festival will make the entire operation lighter and more sustainable. According to the national operator, eliminating the need for technical resources and maintaining the quality of the call.
Therefore, from 6th of July, thanks to the size and agility of 5G cameras and smartphones, anyone will be able to follow from a distance. Note that they will have not only some of their favorite concerts, but also other key moments. That is, moments such as the opening of the venue, the arrival of the artists, backstage scenes, among others.
Initiative aims to demonstrate the potential of NOS’ 5G network in Portugal
In addition, the images will be captured using only a 5G smartphone. This equipment will be used by Tiago Gomes – the 5G Special Reporter. He will be responsible for covering some of the most interesting, fun and unusual moments of the festival. Thus, over the four days, the captured content will be broadcast live during the broadcast.
People will also have access to plans that were previously inaccessible. This is thanks to a 5G camera placed on the NOS Stage, which will broadcast never-before-seen plans.
On the other hand, the features offered by the NOS 5G network at the venue – speeds up to 1Gbps, more connectivity, more reliability and less latency. Factors that, according to the operator, will allow music enthusiasts to share, in real time, the emotions and the outstanding moments of the festival.
The technological infrastructure to provide the festival with 5G coverage
In this edition, the technology and communications infrastructure to support NOS Alive is comparable to that provided to a medium-sized city in Portugal, such as Leiria. In all, there are more than 500 km of fiber optics spread over the 11 hectares of the festival grounds and 50 mobile antennas.
Furthermore, as part of these operations, and specifically for the transmission of the festival in real time, an isolated 5G network was set up, the first in Portugal.
The main tower of the NOS network inside the enclosure uses a new technology in Portugal. This is a new antenna used in some of the biggest events on the planet, such as the Super Bowl. This spherical antenna works like a multi-beam lens. Thus, allowing a signal more immune to interference.
The transmission capacity of this antenna is multiplied by 12, increasing data transmission speeds and ensuring quality of service.
In this way, it will be easier for all visitors to the venue to make video calls in real time, or perform instant downloads and uploads, even in a space that will reach more than 50 thousand people.
