American actor of Colombian origin, John Leguizamo (“Way of Carlito”, “Romeo + Juliet”, “John Wick”) considered the choice of Franco for this role ambiguous.
“How is this still going on? Why is Hollywood excluding us and also stealing our stories? No more Hollywood appropriations and streaming services! Boycott!
I don’t have a problem with Franco, but he’s not Hispanic!” wrote Leguizamo.
Franco’s father is of Portuguese descent, while both of Castro’s parents are from Spain. Castro himself was born in Cuba.
Filming will begin on August 15 in Colombia, with an unknown release date.
