Genshin Impact holds many mysteries shrouded in unexplained legend, including the Moon Sisters, the cosmically powerful entities that control the lunar cycle, and the Paimon. The open-world action RPG HoYoverse continues to intrigue players with the latest update, version 3.0, and the Sumeru region. The main storyline of Genshin Impact continues in Sumeru, introducing the player to a land enriched with culture and mystery over the millennia.
The Sisters of the Moon have existed for over 6,000 years prior to Genshin Impact, before all current members of the Seven such as Zhongli appeared. Sisters of the Moon Aria, Sonnet and Kanon are considered the ancestors of the ancient Sili scattered across Teyvat. The Moon Sisters, tasked with protecting the world from destruction, serve as makeshift moons in the Moon Palace. However, one incident caused the Moon Sisters to abandon their duty and led to the destruction of Teyvat long ago. The Powers withered into the misty forms that are often seen in Genshin Impact today, and the Moon Sisters are believed to have died long ago.
Theories from the Genshin Impact community suggest that Paimon is the Moon Sister or her reincarnation. During the Aranyaka world quest in Genshin Impact, the NPC Arama refers to Paimon as a silver being like the moon in the sky. Arama belongs to the Aranar race, plant-like spirits known for their great wisdom in the Sumeru region. The dialogue between Arama and Paimon does not indicate a connection between Paimon and the Moon Sisters, but the Genshin Impact Reddit community suggests that this dialogue is part of an overall narrative. Some Genshin Impact characters have taken note of Paimon’s unique appearance, which may be reminiscent of the legend of the Moon Sisters.
In the story quest, Tignari mentions that normal living beings cannot resist the Withering Zones, and elemental forces offer little resistance for a short period. Tignari knows that Paimon can counter these tainted zones on her own, making her suspicious in this regard. Possible connections between the Paimon and the Moon Sisters were also mentioned when Kaedehara Kazuha first appears in Liyue. Kazuha states that Traveler and Paimon have the “essence of the stars”, hinting at their connection to the cosmos.
Paimon’s connection to the Moon Sisters remains unclear, but it appears that the Traveler’s journey through Teyvat is gradually revealing more and more details about Genshin Impact’s distant past. During the journey, the Traveler must also uncover the truth behind the actions of his siblings and Khaenri’a.
In Genshin Impact updates 3.1 to 3.5, Sumeru will expand with new story content and areas to explore. The new content could be related to ancient civilizations such as Khaenri’ah, or the mysteries surrounding the Moon Sisters.
