Canalys has published the results of a study of the global market for smart personal audio devices – wireless headphones of various types: in the second quarter of this year, the industry showed a negative trend.
The market volume in unit terms amounted to 98.1 million units. This is 1.7% less than the result for the second quarter of 2021. The decline is explained by the current geopolitical situation and high inflation: these factors have negatively affected purchasing power and forced users to save on the purchase of new gadgets.
It is noted that the only segment of the smart personal audio industry that continues to grow is the TWS sector – these are fully wireless submersible headphones. Here, year-on-year sales rose 8% to 63.0 million units. This is in line with estimates from Counterpoint Technology Market Research, which also reported growth in this segment.
The largest supplier of TWS products, according to Canalys, is Apple with a share of 27.8%. Samsung is in second place with a score of 9.3%, and Xiaomi closes the top three with 5.3%. Moreover, if the first two of the listed companies on an annualized basis showed an increase of 13% each, then Xiaomi sales collapsed by 38%.
The top five also included boAt and Skullcandy with shares of 5.2% and 4.1%, respectively. All other vendors together control 48.3% of the global TWS market.
