RB Leipzig midfielder Xaver Schlager commented on the defeat in the Champions League matchday 1 against Shakhtar (1:4):
“The real blow for us was their second goal. If we had continued to press for another 15 minutes after we equalized and pushed Shakhtar even further, the game would have been tighter. But they again took the lead from the first attack. In the second half it spurred them on and gave them more confidence and they all defended, which made it even more difficult for us.
We are all sad and depressed. We have big ambitions as a team and of course we want to win. Losing the way we did is very disappointing. If we were clearly the worst team, and Shakhtar had beaten us on the case, I would have said: “Okay, they were better.” But today it was not so. Losing is hard to explain.”
