The US military received the first batch of augmented reality glasses based on the HoloLens design. The troops received 5,000 of the 121,000 points that Microsoft is to deliver as part of a $21.9 billion deal over 10 years.
In 2018, Microsoft signed a contract for $480 million, the agreement was expanded in March 2021. As part of the deal, Microsoft pledged to provide the industrial version of the devices, components and technical support.
The US military has now adopted part of the first batch of military HoloLens. Delivery has been put on hold pending more rigorous testing, based on which the device rollout plan may be adjusted with time to address potential deficiencies.

The Integrated Vision Augmentation System (IVAS) integrates a night vision device, a thermal imager and SBS sensors (mini airborne drone control system). Information is transmitted in high resolution to the display in front of the soldier’s eyes. The device also uses augmented reality and machine learning based on Microsoft Azure cloud services to create a realistic learning environment.
Microsoft’s partnership with the military has been far from smooth. More than 100 employees of the company wrote an open letter to CEO Satya Nadella expressing their dissatisfaction with working for the military. In April, the oversight agency of the Department of Defense expressed concern that the huge amount the army would pay for points could be a waste of taxpayer money – many in the military were critical of IVAS.
The Administration of the President of the United States noted that similar opposition was also provided to the introduction of night vision devices. They were introduced in the 1970s and are now widely used by military forces around the world.
The final IVAS test report is due out next month. He will help Congress decide whether to approve the allocation of the next $424.2 million in the deal. The House of Representatives and the Senate have already proposed significant cuts in funding for the program.
