In the quarterfinals of EuroBasket 2022, the Polish team created a sensation by beating one of the main favorites of the tournament – Slovenia. The leader of the Polish national team Mateusz Ponitka made a triple-double in this meeting, gaining 26 points, making 16 rebounds and 10 assists.
Note that Ponitka became only the fourth player in history who scored a triple-double at the European Championship. In 1993, a triple-double made the center of the Croatian national team Stojan Vrankovic, in 1995 – his teammate Toni Kukoch, and in 2017 – Romanian Andrei Mandache.
“This is my first triple-double in my life. I didn’t think I’d do it at EuroBasket. But I still don’t feel it. Now I think how could we miss the advantage of 20 points during the match. But it’s good that we still achieved victory and reached the semi-finals,” Ponitka said after the match.
