Developers from thatgamecompany studio clarified Sky: Children of the Light release date for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The free-to-play adventure will be available on Sony consoles in December 2022. Also they announcedthat the number of downloads of the game on all platforms exceeded 160 million.
The creators did not specify whether the PlayStation 5 will receive a separate version with improvements or whether the game will work on this platform in backward compatibility mode. The exact release date is also unknown.
The team announced the start of porting Sky: Children of the Light to Sony systems last month. At the same time, the authors confirmed that crossplay will be supported on the PlayStation, as well as on other platforms.
As part of the Tokyo Game Show 2022 exhibition, which will end on September 18, the developers presented a teaser for the animated adaptation, announced in March at the AnimeJapan 2022 exhibition. The studio organized its pavilion at the Makuhari Messe exhibition center and is holding YouTube channel broadcasts, where he talks more about the game world, soundtrack, visual component and other features. Sky: Children of the Light was released on July 18, 2019 as a temporary iOS exclusive. On April 7, 2020, the game appeared on Android, and on June 29, 2021, on Nintendo Switch. In July 2020, the developers reported overcoming the mark of 20 million downloads, in October of the same year the number of downloads exceeded 50 million, and in July 2021 – 100 million. In January 2020, the authors confirmed the PC version, but the release date not yet defined on this platform.
Sky: Children of the Light is thatgamecompany’s fourth game and its first self-released project. The previous three – Flow, Flower and Journey – were published by Sony under an exclusive agreement. In 2017, Flower appeared on iOS, in 2019 on PC, and shortly after that, Journey was transferred to both platforms (published by Annapurna Interactive). In the latest adventure, users travel through magical worlds as “children of light” and solve puzzles together. The game features a more developed social component.
Sky: Children of the Light received a number of prestigious awards, including Apple’s best iPhone game of the year. Adventure Rating Metacritic is 82 out of 100 points, and in a review for 3DNews, Alexander Babulin rated it 9 out of 10, noting its ability to “change the landscape of the mobile gaming world.”
On July 11, the Season of Shattering started in the game and will end on September 26.
