It looks like Nintendo has another hit on its hands as the recently released game Splatoon 3 has already reached big numbers. In Japan alone, 3.45 million copies were sold in the first three days after the game’s release. This number is only a small fraction, but the popularity of the game is clear, which is a good sign for Nintendo as the company has big plans for the game in the future in the form of Splatfest events.
While before the launch of Splatoon 3, fans got a little introduction, giving players the opportunity to try out the three-color war on the lawns, after the launch, Nintendo announced the first official Splatfest. It will take place from September 23rd to 25th and players will choose between Gear, Grub and Fun. While the general idea behind Splatfests is the same as the previous two games, Nintendo has added a few new things to Splatoon 3.
One of the newest additions is a currency called Conch Shells. These items have a unique function in Splatoon 3, so here we will cover everything players need to know.
What are conch shells?
New to Splatoon 3 are Conch Shells, a type of currency that can only be earned during Splatfest Weekend events. Luckily, they are fairly easy to get, despite only being able to collect them for a limited time. They serve a dual purpose: they can be spent on unique merchants, but they are also used to count which Splatoon team is the overall winner of the Splatfest by collecting the most.
Before the player can start earning shells, they need to join one of the three Splatfest teams, which can be done immediately after the release of the Sneak Peek update. Immediately after arriving in Splatsville, players must look for a new booth to enter the competition. At this point, players must take part in PvP battles such as Turf War or the Salmon Run co-op mode, and shells will be earned as the Catalog levels up. The first wins during the day also grant bonus XP, which should help you earn shells faster.
How to use seashells
After collecting a bunch of shells, players can return to downtown Splatsville and find a new machine called Shell-Out. It is only available during the Splatfest event, but here players can spend their shells on various rewards instead of regular coins. It is possible to spend 1 shell to get a random reward, although what players get can be anything.
Keep in mind that shells do not persist after the end of the Splatfest event. So while they are also used to determine the winning team, players should take care to spend them all before the end of Splatfest or they will be completely lost.
