This will be the first Karate Kid film since the 2010 reboot to feature Jaden Smith as 12-year-old Dre Parker and Jackie Chan as his martial arts mentor, Mr. Khan. Despite decent critical and box office success, the sequel to the reboot never materialised.
However, Sony announced the “return of the original Karate Kid franchise” that launched in 1984. The original film starred Ralph Makio as the main character Daniel LaRusso, the late Pat Morita as his mentor Mr. Johnny Lawrence’s opponent is William Zabka.
No details about the cast and crew of the new Karate Kid movie have yet been released, so it remains a mystery how Sony will tie it to the original franchise. It is noteworthy that both Makio and LaRusso starred in the spin-off “Cobra Kai” for five successful seasons.
Sony says the new Karate Kid will premiere on June 7, 2024 – nearly 40 years after the first film premiered.
