Yes, you are made like a rat! A Plague Tale Requiem has just landed on PC and consoles, even in the Game Pass, so it’s impossible not to be tempted. On our side, on JV, we loved Asobo’s new game, but what do other specialized media think about it? Answer.
The sequel to a truly beloved video game
If there is one release to watch today, it’s A Plague Tale Requiem. But if, you know, it’s the sequel to A Plague Tale Innocence – an action-adventure game released in 2019 in the heart of medieval France, plagued by plague and waves of rats. At the time, the first episode was praised by critics and gamers alike, revealing the Asobo studio to the eyes of the world. Since then, the Bordeaux firm has become a privileged friend of Microsoft, even taking care of the development of the new Flight Simulator. Suffice to say that the French know how to manage the technique, that they are not outdone on everything related to narration and rhythm. Now is the time to prove it with Requiem! The software is now available on PC, PS5, Switch (Cloud), Xbox Series. It is also included in the Game Pass on computers and consoles.
French studio better than PlayStation?
Come on, let’s take a look at what the specialized press thinks. First (hehe) we start with our rating, a beautiful 18/20 – or “exceptional” – awarded by Carnbee. Our gentleman Xbox is unequivocal, speaking of “a great vintage” resembling “confirmation” for the Asobo team. A last expression that we also find at IGN Italia, which opted for a 92/100. It must be said that, on this sequel, the Bordeaux studio has made every effort to improve all aspects of A Plague Tale Innocence. Whether it’s the graphics (no 60fps mode in the program); the rhythm and the narration, evoked as particularly dark, the whole has passed a stage.
A Plague Tale Requiem is not far from being a masterpiece. The quality of the writing, the controlled narration and the density of the characters, this intense relationship between Amicia and Hugo give the game an incredible emotional dimension at the heart of a journey through a world as hard as it is beautiful” – Carole Quintaine, about A Plague Tale Requiem
It’s simple, A Plague Tale Requiem is the subject of an almost unanimous consensus on Metacritic, the famous review aggregator. Depending on the platforms, the game oscillates between an 81 | 85 (between a 16 and a 17/20, therefore). The media Push Square even speaks of “one of the greatest narrative experiences on PS5 to date”. So that Asobo could flirt with PlayStation and studios (Santa Monica, Naughty Dog) champions of narrative solo action-adventure? Obviously, the Bordeaux team would not be far from it. Requiem “lacks a small coat of polish to be at the technical level of the masters of the genre” writes Carnbee, in his review. The rest is very solid.
Another perfectible new episode
But, as they say, all tastes are in nature! Because yes, there are a few media that do not endorse A Plague Tale Requiem. Even sites that have given it a very good rating, such as The Sixth Axis or Game Informer, notice phases of infiltration that have not changed too much. But that’s the narration which seems to be the dividing point, deemed “messy” by Digital Trends (70/100). Gauthier Andres, aka “Gautoz”, former journalist on Gamekult, also speaks of a “scattered” plot. As you mentioned above, Asobo seems to have made radical choices on the script for A Plague Tale Requiem. Yes, you can’t please everyone.
