QR codes will act as another alternative to a plastic bank card. The holder of the Mir card will be able to generate a QR code on a smartphone and present it for reading by a scanner in trade and service enterprises, representatives of the Mir payment system said. The Bank of Russia supports the integration of new non-cash payment methods. The development of the Mir system will allow citizens to make purchases in the usual way without presenting a bank card, using only a smartphone. The Central Bank noted that the important point is that a person has the right to choose which payment instrument to use in a given situation.
According to the source, Post Bank is planning to introduce a new payment method, and the organization is already carrying out preparatory measures. It is noted that this technology will become a kind of replacement for Apple Pay and Google Pay services, which have left the Russian market. Unlike payment via SBP, where the client must scan a QR code at the store’s checkout using a smartphone, here an employee of a retail enterprise will scan a QR code generated in the client’s mobile banking application. This payment option is faster, which is an important factor. It is noted that for the widespread introduction of new technology, banks and shops will need to refine their own information systems, which will require not only time, but also additional costs.
