Another update for the Freebox Revolution, 12 years after its release

Indestructible, the Freebox Revolution plays the extensions and still receives functional updates, 12 years after its release.

In 2020, Free had already surprised us by deploying an update that greatly improved Wi-Fi performance on the Freebox Revolution. Here we are in October 2022, and in the context of energy sobriety requested by the French government, Free has updated its old Revolution box.

The new update adds a new menu that gives you access to activating a light sleep as well as a hibernate. The idea here is to save energy and respond to the current concern. You can also disable the USB ports, Free also indicates that the deep sleep mode keeps the phone and the Internet active.

There are also new CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) settings for the HDMI interface. These allow you to control CEC-enabled devices with a single remote.

What is missing from the Freebox Revolution in 2022?

Because truth be told, what is the Freebox Revolution missing in 2022? Compared to competitors’ boxes, not much (Wi-Fi 6, higher speeds, etc.). We forget how far the other ISPs were lagging behind at the end of 2010 and the time they took to catch up with the troublemaker operator.

When it was released, the Revolution already offered ADSL and fiber compatibility, CPL sockets provided to connect the two boxes, NAS functionalities, a 250 GB hard drive, a Blu-ray player as standard, a processor, for the part TV, capable of running games and applications… Well, of course, for this last feature, the Free Store was such a failure that we wouldn’t even have noticed its absence if Free had removed it during ‘an update.

But still, Free’s choices were relevant from the start. And the box has been enriched with many other features via software updates (Freebox OS, VPN, Deezer, AirPlay compatibility, etc.) or a hardware refresh to offer it support for Wi-Fi 5 in particular.
