Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the Netflix series spin-off for Cyberpunk 2077, has won a lot, found many fans and helped the role-playing game to rejuvenate. But: more will probably not come.
Creating Cyberpunk: Edgerunners certainly wasn’t a silly idea from Netflix and CD Projekt RED. The series was well-received, attracting a wide audience while also encouraging many to take a closer look at Cyberpunk 2077, thanks in no small part to Edgerunner content coming to the game with Update 1.6.
Such a success story is crying out for a sequel, but apparently there won’t be. Famitsu’s colleagues questioned CD Projekt RED Japan’s Satoru Honma and asked for a second season. However, this was clearly denied, Edgerunners had been planned from the outset as an independent work.
“Personally, I would like to continue working with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, also because we have received very good feedback,” said Honma. “Just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we’re working on season 2 in the background’. Even if we could do more anime in the future, I don’t know if there will be Season 2 or something else entirely.”
It’s a shame, but on the other hand it might also be a good thing if you look at how many series are becoming more and more worn out from season to season.
