The star of the original Matrix trilogy, Laurence Fishburne, gave a funny and slightly rude assessment of the latest installment in the franchise, Resurrection of the Matrix. Released last December, the fourth film in the Matrix series sees Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss return as Neo and Trinity, 18 years after their previous roles in those roles.
In the original films, Fishburne played Morpheus, the leader of the human resistance responsible for finding and freeing Neo from the Matrix. While Resurrection saw fellow original trilogy stars Jada Pinkett Smith and Lambert Wilson return along with Reeves and Moss, Fishburne was never approached to reprise his role. Instead, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was chosen to play the AI version of Morpheus, based on the original Fishburne character.
Fishburne, Variety asked about his thoughts on the latest entry in the Matrix franchise. Admitting that he didn’t miss being in Resurrection, he was candid about the film, saying that “it wasn’t as good as I had hoped”. However, he also praised Reeves and Moss for their roles. Check out his full comment below:
No, I don’t think I’ve lost anything. The movie wasn’t as bad as I expected, but it wasn’t as good as I had hoped either. But I think Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, for their part, did what was required of them. This is my take on the film.
Despite being considered one of the most inventive and successful sci-fi films of modern times, The Matrix’s various sequels have failed to reclaim the popularity of the original. While Resurrection of the Matrix had the potential to correct some of the perceived failures of Reboot and Revolution, it too fell victim to mixed reviews and flopped at the box office. Since Morpheus himself hasn’t expressed any enthusiasm for The Matrix Resurrection either, there’s no doubt that the latest movie falls short of the huge legacy of the first movie.
