Mortal Kombat celebrated its 30th anniversary yesterday with a special event: no, Mortal Kombat 12 has not been unveiled… unlike Mortal Kombat Onslaught, a brand new title that will try something new. Explanations.
The game of gacha and mouse
Ed Boon, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat and the thinking head of NetherRealm, had announced it: the event dedicated to the thirtieth anniversary of the saga would not be the one where Mortal Kombat 12 will be announced. In contrast, the event nevertheless took the opportunity to lift the veil on a new project called Mortal Kombat Onslaught, a… RPG on mobile.
You have to see it to believe it, but the terms are official: it is more precisely a “Collection RPG”, which looks devilishly like a gacha. The title is intended on iOS and Android and should then be based on mechanics of items to unlock, collect and play: a trend that has already proven itself in the industry and on which Warner Bros. would probably like to lean a little more.
Viscera for all collectors
Alas, apart from a first artwork and a discreet official site, no trailer has been released. On the other hand, we have some information delivered by Ed Boon himself:
We’re pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat to allow players to experience the franchise in new ways, while staying true to its visceral nature. With Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, we’ve reimagined Mortal Kombat as a team-based, strategic collectible RPG with fast-paced group combat that fans and newcomers alike can enjoy.
The developer also promises us a cinematographic experience, always in the very trashy line of the franchise with, therefore, the possibility of forming your own teams of combatants.
For the rest, it is still vague and it will therefore be necessary to rely on pure and hard patience. It is good to know that the application will therefore be deployed on the AppStore and the Play Store in the course of 2023at an undetermined date.
