As the streaming provider Netflix announced, another developer studio was founded in Southern California. The new studio will be headed up by Chacko Sonny, best known to the PlayStation community as the producer of God of War: Ascension.
The streaming provider Netflix has also been offering video games for a while and recently took over the “Oxenfree” makers from Night School Studios for the corresponding replenishment.
As Mike Verdu, the vice president of Netflix’s gaming division, confirmed in a recent statement, the streaming provider founded another development studio that will start work in southern California and will be managed by an old acquaintance. We’re talking about Chacko Sonny, who acted as a producer for the “God of War: Ascension” released in 2013 and worked on other projects at Sony Santa Monica Studios.
Until September 2021, Sonny worked at Blizzard Entertainment and, as an executive producer, was largely responsible for the successful multiplayer shooter “Overwatch”.
Netflix plans further with third-party content
“He could have gone anywhere. He could have made money. He could have done anything and he chose to come here. We’re building a team around him and we expect him to reinvent what games can be,” Verdu commented on Sonny’s signing. The vice president of the gaming division also explained that Netflix will rely on both internally developed games and third-party projects in the future.
“I think you need both,” he explained. “You have to harness the incredible creative firepower of the global gaming ecosystem, and that’s why our external games pillar is just as important as our internal games. But with internal games we want to build up institutional competence. We want teams to go through multiple cycles together and essentially get really, really good at collaborating and delivering great products, and sometimes the only way to make that happen is by giving them the space within the organization.”
