Last year, we highly praised Nothing’s first product in the tech world, the earbuds ear (1)which hit shelves at around €99, betting on an extremely attractive design, as well as a set of features that we would normally only see in the higher ranges, which are therefore more expensive.
However, the ear (1) has already been completely overtaken by other offers such as the Redmi Buds 3 Pro, or the latest Buds 4 Pro. Which is exactly why it turns out to be strange to see Nothing raising the price of this product, by ~50€. The idea is not to sell anymore?
Nothing raised the price of earbuds by €50. Because?
Therefore, according to Nothing’s CEO, Carl Pei, the company is not being able to deal with the increase in production costs, and therefore, the Ear (1) will even increase from €99, to €149. However, on the smartphone side, the Phone (1), still nothing has been announced.
Does it make sense to increase the price by 50% after a year? According to Nothing, yes, now read:
“When we started developing the ear (1), we had 3 engineers. Now, 1 year later, we have 185. During these 12 months we released 15 updates, which in turn turned the product into something very different from what we originally released.”
In addition to all this, it is also necessary to talk a little about inflation, cost of materials, cost of electricity, and even transport costs. But still… I’m not convinced by this raise. The ear(1) loses a lot of what made them an interesting product, and perhaps more importantly, Nothing loses some credibility.
