Synopsis
Waiting for Godot – a title that has become proverbial around the world. Perhaps no other piece of the century. XX has known such an expressive, global reach. It is legitimate to say that, on the night that this “two-act tragicomedy” premiered, Samuel Beckett completely altered not only dramatic literature, but the theatrical condition itself. On a road, next to a tree, two creatures with no threshing floor or shore, coming out of a vaudeville or a silent movie, play games and pranks, laughing and crying, discussing everything: a pair of boots, the Gospels, suicide… They wait for someone who doesn’t arrive, who never arrives: Godot, a mystery character that Beckett always refused to identify with God, because, more than what we expect, he was interested in highlighting what happens while we wait. A top name on the international scene and president of the Union of Theaters in Europe, the Romanian-Hungarian director Gábor Tompa directed actors from the almost resident cast of the TNSJ in this production with which, on March 7, we closed the program for the Centenary of Teatro São João. At the time, it was done only online; now, after waiting so long, we will finally be able to watch the puerile and clownish survival games of Didi and Gogo, interpreted with the precision of a musical score.
