Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard isn’t going quite as smoothly as hoped for the Xbox company. Sony in particular feels rather unfairly treated by the planned deal and is now putting a few obstacles in the way of the competition. The focus of the dispute is always Call of Duty. Every year, the shooter series attracts millions of players on PC and console. With the takeover, it’s (theoretically) possible in the future for new games to appear exclusively for Xbox (and PC). Sony and PlayStation would get nothing.
Call of Duty will remain on PlayStation for the time being
Of course, Microsoft wants the merger with Activision to be accepted by the authorities. That’s why Sony has already been approached and assured the company that Call of Duty will continue to be playable on the PlayStation consoles – for an as yet unspecified period of time. Now Sony seems to have prevented Microsoft from bringing the Call of Duty parts to Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass respectively. At least for a few years.
This information emerged from a letter from Microsoft to the UK Competition and Markets Authority. The Xbox team also rated Sony’s claim that market leadership would be in jeopardy if Call of Duty were lost as “not credible”. An official takeover is currently expected in the coming year. We will then find out at the latest how Call of Duty will continue.
