Microsoft claims in a letter to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority that Sony is pursuing plans to release Insomniac Games’ Wolverine game in 2023.
Developed by Insomniac Games, Marvel’s Wolverine will be released in 2023. At least that’s what Microsoft claims in a document sent to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
In it, Microsoft highlights a number of PS5 exclusive titles out: “PlayStation has also announced a number of first- and third-party exclusives for launch in 2023, including Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, Horizon, Final Fantasy XVI and Forspoken.”
Whether the company has inside information about Sony’s release plans or the information is pure speculation remains a secret for the time being.
Insomniac points to early development phase
Sony and Insomniac Games have so far waived a release window for “Marvel’s Wolverine”. However, last year’s announcement said the title was in a very early stage of production, making it unlikely that it would be released anytime soon.
During the announcement of the Wolverine game, Ryan Schneider, Insomniac’s head of franchise strategy and studio relations, emphasized, “Similar to our Spider-Man games, our goal is not just to respect the character’s DNA that makes him popular, but also to look for ways to keep it fresh and reflect the spirit of Insomniac.”
And further: “Although Marvel’s Wolverine is still in a very early stage of development, from what I’ve seen from the emotional story and the innovative gameplay, the team has already created something really special.”

Another big superhero game from Insomniac, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is slated for a PS5 release in 2023. During the week was reaffirmedthat nothing has changed in this plan.
With that in mind, it would be difficult for Insomniac Games to prioritize development on two projects at once and release two major AAA titles within 12 months.
