Game news Silent Hill 2: A too modern PS5 & PC remake? Disgruntled Horror Game Fans

As horror franchise Silent Hill finally returns, fans are disappointed with the first images of the remake of the second episode. Considered a true masterpiece, Silent Hill 2 worked wonders in 2001, on PS2. A feat almost impossible to reproduce?
Silent Hill 2 Remake, return of a cult game
Straight out of the fog that saw it born, the Silent Hill license made its big comeback on Wednesday, October 19, during an event organized by the Japanese publisher Konami. The opportunity to announce a bunch of new projects for a huge horror game name absent for ten years. On the program: a new opus, the return of the saga to the cinema, two mysterious titles – and above all the formalization of the remake of Silent Hill 2, the existence of which has been the subject of rumors for many months already.
Yes, it is indeed the Bloober Team (The Medium, Layers of Fear) who will bring up to date the adventures of James, hero of the episode, in search of his wife in the strange city! The game is presumably slated for next year, with a one-year exclusivity on PS5 and PC. As of now, we don’t know much except that the remake was built on the Unreal Engine 5 game engine and opts for more modern gameplay with a handheld camera.
The atmosphere of the original game not respected?
The comeback of a cult series, what’s more with the redesign of its best episode, the fans are undoubtedly in heaven? Well, not really! On social networks, many believe that the atmosphere of Silent Hill 2, released more than twenty years ago on PS2, has been lost along the way. “As feared, (the game) went to the steamroller” explains for example At0mium, a French videographer who offers to discover the first opuses on his YouTube channel. “I hope I’m wrong, but this video really has none of the original atmosphere. It’s beautiful, but that’s all”.
“I thought (about the Silent Hill 2 remake) ‘oh yeah, that’s clean’ (in a positive sense, but also in a ‘negative’ sense of the word). It lacks a certain ‘roughness’ and the atmosphere does not seem very present either (to see, you never know)” – Elilolatops (Twitter)
James, hero of Silent Hill 2 (2001 / 2023)
The opinions of the genre are numerous, even if other fans are more enthusiastic about the project of the duo Konami | BlooberTeam. Beyond demonstrating how Silent Hill 2 is a cult – and important – game for many, these reviews are indicative of a exceptional software in its time. In 2000, no realistic motion capture to transpose the expressions of the hero James! The cutscenes, made by hand, then demonstrate incredible accuracy. The second part retains the fog of the first episode, which has become a kind of trademark – even if there is no longer any need to hide the technical limitations. It’s the details that make Silent Hill 2 special.
A team of enthusiasts (Bloober Team)
It’s a bit far-fetched, but you could almost say that the “crado” side of the game on PS2 helps make it so unique. At the same time disturbing, disturbing. On the remake, it’s almost “too” clean. However, in the columns of the PlayStation Blog, the Bloober Team wants to be very reassuring. “One of our main objectives is to keep the atmosphere that made Silent Hill 2 exceptional,” assures Motoi Okamoto, producer on the project. To do this, the studio is accompanied by Akira Yamaoka and Masahiro Ito, respectively artistic director and composer of the original video game.
Mateusz Lenart, creative director, goes further during the Konami show, saying that Silent Hill 2 will have to provoke the “same indelible imprint” today than the original game back then. But of course, industry standards have changed a lot in twenty years, and “some things have to be updated to have a similar impact”. Hence the choice of a shoulder camera! Who knows, like the remake of Resident Evil 2, Bloober Team may be hitting the bull’s eye to bring James’ adventure to the ninth generation. A bigger city? New scenes? We would like to be surprised.
