Silent Hill 2 is an absolute monument of video games and the rumor of a remake had been circulating for months and months: last night, Konami finally formalized the redesign with a trailer in good and due form. And yes, there is something to be curious about.
My name is Sunderland, James Sunderland
Released in 2002, Silent Hill 2 quickly established itself as an exceptional game : with a sensational horror, an impacting scenario and a terrifying atmosphere, the experience is today considered among the best of the Tenth Art. It is therefore after more than a year of rumor that Konami decided to formalize its remake, last night, during the Silent Hill Transmission… which also unveiled two other games, a film and a series!
This redesign will therefore not be developed internally: the Japanese publisher has decided to entrust the reins to Bloober Team, Polish studio behind the two Layers of Fear, The Medium, Blair Witch and Observer. For once, and in order to best respect the original work, concept artist Masahiro Ito and composer Akira Yamaoka will return to their respective rolesthose who participated in the creation of the 2002 title. Excellent news.
An exclusive PS5 console (temporary), also planned on PC
Silent Hill 2 will thus present a technique of first choice. To do this, the developers have planned to rely on the new generation of consoles and more particularly on the PS5: the game will be offered first exclusively at Sony for at least the first twelve monthson the home console side. A PC release is also planned at the same time., through Steam. The PC configurations are even already revealed!
In terms of pure and hard novelties, we are therefore talking about a redesign under Unreal Engine 5, the brand new engine from Epic Games, supported by Lumen and Nanite technologies. The first allows an extremely realistic lighting management, while the second allows a real authenticity of the decorations and environments.
Thanks to motion capture, Bloober Team also promises a perfect transcription of the emotions of the characters: “we were able to create the best facial expressions in the history of the series, giving the characters a wide range of emotions, even without pronouncing the least word”, we are told.
Refreshed gameplay
The game will also feature revamped and modernized gameplay. Thereby, the camera will no longer be fixed, but will move behind James Sunderland’s shoulderthe protagonist (whose new face was also revealed in the first trailer, to discover in our player above).
Mateusz Lenart, Creative Director and Lead Designer of Bloober Team, comments on the matchup system:
With this angle (the handheld camera, editor’s note), we want to immerse players even deeper into the game, make them feel like they are part of this supernatural world and offer them an even more visceral experience in all respects. .
One change often leads to another. Also, we have redesigned the combat system and some scenes, among other things. With the game presented to us through James’ eyes, we found new ways to keep the player in a state of constant tension.
The game boasting the merits of the PS5, a focus is made on the exploitation of its features, such as support for adaptive triggers and haptic feedback from the DualSense (a work already done on The Medium). 3D audio should also play an important role in immersion, while the SSD will sign the complete disappearance of loading times, with the total and free exploration of the city of Silent Hill. Finally, Mateusez Lenart admits that the game “will benefit from other innovative ideas”, but that he prefers “to keep secret for the moment.”
With these technologies, we hope to make Silent Hill 2 an even more challenging and unforgettable experience for new and seasoned players alike. We’re doing everything we can to honor this classic, while reinvigorating its gameplay. The result will be a Silent Hill game offering a sound environment and graphics of unprecedented quality for the saga. Development is far from over, but we can’t wait for fans to test the game.
Silent Hill 2 is scheduled for an undetermined date on PS5 and PC.
