After a long study on the contents that will make up the Winters Expansion of Resident Evil Village, from the Shadows of Rose DLC (here our preview of Shadows of Rose) to the arrival of the third person mode in the basic adventure, the Resident Evil Showcase has come alive, with the warm voice of the Duke who has accompanied us to the gates of the gloomy village of rural Spain that will be the backdrop to the events of the “new” fourth chapter. Between the return of the merchant and the renewed gameplay – as well as the visual presentation – there are many topics to be addressed, so let’s not get lost in chat and let’s return to the land of the Plaga.
Friends and enemies in great shape
Before focusing on the actual gameplay, we would like to spend a few words on the second part of the window dedicated to Resident Evil 4 and, specifically, on the story trailer. Inside we found many iconic scenes of the original experience, from the meeting with Luis Sera, to the delusional speeches of Ramon Salazar, eighth castellan of his family and faithful servant of the insane Osmund Saddler.
In addition to the leader of the Illuminados himself, who will order his followers to “donate” the Plaga to the unfortunate Leon as well, we have reviewed some iconic monsters such as El Gigante and the very unfriendly Bitores Mendez, the village chief. We then witnessed scenes with Ada Wong, almost a ghost of the past in the eyes of the protagonist, and waiting to understand if we will clash again with the perfidious Krauser, we definitely feel like saying one thing: the visual presentation of Resident Evil 4 seemed to us in great shape, with very expressive characters full of small details, between the excellent skin shading and the convincing realization of the clothing.
Net of the fact that the game will also be released on PS4, Capcom’s RE Engine could prove – for the umpteenth time – absolutely indicated to revive a great classic full of iconic faces and scenarios. From the heart of El Pueblo, passing through the church, to Salazar castle, the restoration work carried out by the developers seemed to us to be of a very high standard, thanks to both the global lighting that continues to amaze, and the overall quality. of the texture compartment. If in the field of play we will find ourselves in front of several big and small changes, on the plot front, at least according to the scenes that were shown to us, Resident Evil 4 could turn out to be very similar to the original: after all, the narrative rhythm of Shinji’s horror Mikami worked wonderfully, so – especially if with the necessary interventions on Ashley’s “protection” sections – we wouldn’t be surprised if the experts had decided to intervene in a less incisive way on the weave. Clearly the developers may have chosen to keep the surprises and possible changes on this front for themselves, so we just have to wait for the publication of further material or to try the game to express ourselves with knowledge of the facts on the matter.
Of close fights and odd merchants
With the desire to package an experience as attractive for newbies as worthy of veterans – because it is able to preserve the spirit of the original work – Capcom has intervened in a rather evident way on the gameplay of the game but without “losing the compass”. In the early stages of the gameplay shown by Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi we saw the former RPD agent go into a foggy night inside the village, to find the first clues about the presence of the young Ashley Graham in the area.
The meeting with Ganado, a poor fellow with a broken neck due to the infection of the horrid parasite, made us think of a faster and more responsive shooting, capable of supporting the action drift at the base of the experience. Well, in the sequence set at the first light of dawn – the one that called Leon to face countless enemies and the furious Doctor Salvador (the one armed with a chainsaw and super resistant) – our doubts are further thinned: the clashes of Resident Evil 4 they may be at a tight pace, calling the player to fire more frequently and think fast.
After a few gunshots it will be possible to drive away groups of enemies with a well-aimed kick, and then maybe distance yourself and take advantage of particular environmental opportunities such as the possibility of setting fire to a cow, to push it to strike down with fury on Leon’s opponents. In addition to being able to free himself from the grips of his attackers with his bare hands or with a sharp knife, the protagonist can use his blade to stab enemies on the ground or perform parades at the right time, for example to stop the charges of the Ganados armed with pitchforks .
If we add to this the possibility of shielding yourself with the gun to counter the blows of Salvador’s chainsaw, the fact that the fighting will be intense and strong with different offensive and defensive possibilities appears even more evident. The Producer has promised even more fearsome Ganados, because they have a generous range of attacks, which is why we can’t wait to face even those with the parasite exposed, the cultists of the castle or the frightening Regeneradores. Another of the playful traits that emerged from the gameplay video is also interesting, which concerns the possibility of crouching so as not to be noticed by the enemies.
We do not know to what extent we will be allowed to take this silent approach but we are certainly eager to find out. We would not mind in this regard to find ourselves having to evade the gaze of the towering Bitores Mendez – in sections close in feeling and tension to those with the Tyrant of Resident Evil 2 (here the review of Resident Evil 2) – exploiting precisely this propensity to stealth of good Kennedy. We could not but close the discussion by focusing on the return of the merchant, a side character who has become, in his own way, a true icon of gaming. Net of the re-dubbing, with the new voice that seems to have received all the necessary indications to perform a performance in part with the character, the weird arms dealer, pieces to make them more lethal and other devilry, will allow us to enhance our tools of death and to exchange the rare gems we have laboriously collected to obtain special herbs, objects to be inserted in greater treasures and who knows what else. Just like in the original Resident Evil 4, the management of the space in the briefcase / inventory will be crucial to carry the maximum number of useful resources with you and in this regard there is also a novelty: in addition to the mix of herbs it will be possible to create ammunition if in possession of the appropriate basic materials.
In short, the modern iteration of the fourth chapter of the saga seems to have what it takes to satisfy historical fans and new enthusiasts with a dark-hued adventure capable of both shivering down the spine and giving powerful adrenaline rushes to those who they will have the courage to live it.
