When we think about the future of humanity, in general, two schools clash: those who think that we will experience flying cars, the conquest of space, etc. and others see darker aspects. With artificial intelligence, we can now have leads, but if they will not please everyone…
Can an AI reveal the future of humanity?
And you? You are rather in the perspective of a radiant future with incredible technologies, a potential conquest of the solar system, even more! Or you are part of the other camp, the one who imagines a slightly less enviable future… A la Fallout or The Last of Us.
Many questions arise and the factors are numerous, whether with regard to the policies and choices that humanity will take, but also the evolution of our species.
The artist Fabdream uses artificial intelligence to create paintings that are each more destabilizing than the next. His sometimes very psychedelic montages borrow from many graphic styles to offer kinds of short videos that show the evolution of various phenomena.
And precisely, speaking of evolution, one of his craziest works happens to be an attempt to represent the evolution of humanity, starting from our most distant ancestors, with the most dizzying future.
In this fresco painting the future of humanity, we discover Man transforming himself little by little into a machine, at first humanoid, to then take on more organic forms… And reptilian… Before completely merging into a mass of futuristic-looking buildings.
Before that, we see a man evolve “normally” in the culture we all know, a smartphone in his hand, before transforming his body to become one with the machine. At the end of the video, there remains more than a terrifying and deafening image which completely abandons the human in its physical form.
This short 39 second video is obviously inspired by the myths and stories that we have created for decades to represent the future of humanity. Witness the very stereotypical representations of the Neanderthal man and the hooded man who comes straight out of the Middle Ages. It’s in the middle of the video that the sword turns into a smartphone before completely disappearing from our hand. More cylindrical shapes begin to appear on our mechanical body before sporting sharper shapes.
The artist Fabdream uses many drawing techniques by artificial intelligence, and uses famous representations of Man through time to create rather particular half-man / half-robot creatures.
The future of humanity in science fiction
Even if this future as shown by this AI is simply terrifying, many science fiction stories try to show us what our future could look like, but above all, to help us avoid some mistakes.
Si on prend l’exemple de The Last of Us, humanity has no choice but to flee from a deadly virus that will forever change the way our institutions work. Camps are created and the laws are dictated by small influential groups. The same goes for the Fallout license, which shows us, in a very parodic way, what a post-nuclear war future could look like.
Obviously, the work of Interplay Productions offers an anachronistic world where past and future mingle, but the words remain the same: humanity is no match for the technologies they develop, they are far beyond us.
In another vein, Isaac Asimov’s work Foundation depicts a future where humanity has lost even the trace of planet Earth, the cradle of our species. Thanks to a science called psychohistory, scientists can now predict and calculate large-scale social changes. Humanity merges with technology and science to form one whole.
In any case, artificial intelligence could well help artists to give us ideas for our future. Even though these generated works can be striking, they only use the huge database that we have provided to them. So don’t worry, it’s not tomorrow the day before that we’re going to turn into a reptilian robot.
