Born in 1958, the Gammy Awards, or Grammies, are the musical counterpart of the Oscars. Awarded by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the awards honor artists and technicians in the world of music and the recording industry. A ceremony followed around the world, which until then excluded video games.
The Grammy Awards make room for video games!
Let’s get along, the video game is not completely absent Grammy Awards, but he was never awarded through a category of his own. Christopher Tin won Best Soundtrack for the Civilization IV theme, Journey was nominated in 2013, and a version of Meta Knight’s Revenge from the game Kirby’s Fun Pak, made by the 8-Bit Big Band, won the prize for the best on April 3. These appearances, along with the strength of the video game industry, visibly encouraged the members from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to think about.
At the end of what we imagine to be long and lively debates, the academy has officially decided to integrate music dedicated to video games at the next ceremony, which will take place February 5, 2023 in the USA. A real event for the industry, and a further step towards the recognition of video games as an art “total”, composed of other arts. The category was aptly named Best Score Soundtrack For Video Games And Other Interactive Media, and could therefore reward experiences similar to Bandersnatch, the interactive episode of Black Mirror . This new category has been described as follows by the organization of the ceremony:
Celebrates the excellence of soundtrack albums consisting primarily of original scores and created specifically for, or as an accompaniment to, a current video game or other interactive media released during the selection period.
The list of nominees soon known
It will be necessary wait until November 15 to know the list pieces, soundtracks and composers named in this new category, but our colleagues from Gamekult report that a certain number of works having tried their luck are known. We thus find the soundtrack of Elden Ring (Yuka Kitamura, Yoshimi Kudo, Shoi Miyazawa, Tsukasa Saitoh and Tai Tomisawa), Horizon: Forbidden West (Joris De Man, Niels van der Leest, Oleksa Lozowchuk, The Flight) TUNIC (Janice Kwan and Terence Lee) or Aliens: Fireteam Elite (Austin Wintory) and MultiVersus (Stephen Barton and Gordy Haab).
Forget though God of War: Ragnarok, Sonic Frontiers, World of Warcraft: DragonFlight, Tactics Ogre: Reborn or Pokémon Scarlet / Purple, the selection ended on October 23. These games are therefore not eligible and will have to wait for the 2024 Grammy Awards to hope to lift the trophy. Recall that at present, the most prestigious ceremony rewarding the video game and its music are the BAFTAs, which take place in the United Kingdom. At the last ceremony, it was Returnal, the exclusive PS5 developed by Housemarque, which emerged as the big winner.
