Netflix takes the lead with a new adaptation
Although generally late on specialized platforms, Netflix is not giving up and is still trying to attract Japanese animation fans. If it is difficult for her to have her hand on the simulcast of fashionable anime (Attack on the Titans, Chainsaw Man, Blue Lock or My Hero Academia), she still manages to completely avoid more and more: recently, for example, spectators learned that the second season of Vinland Saga was also going to air on Netflix.
However, it is above all thanks to its original productions that the platform succeeds in this category: we can mention Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (Cyberpunk 2077), Arcane (League of Legends), the CastleVania series or the film Nightmare of the Wolf whose subject Vesemir from The Witcher.
However, this does not prevent Netflix from sometimes taking the lead in also producing original content or content adapted from manga. This was for example the case with Gambling School, Devilman Crybaby or even Dorohedoro. In any case, the platform does not seem to stop there since it recently released a trailer for the adaptation of the webtoon Oemojisangjuui: it to be viewed above, in the header of this article .
“The Subtle Worship of Appearance”
Initially released in 2014, Oemojisangjuui will therefore give rise to the Netflix series called Lookisme. The latter takes up the same plot as the work from which it is inspired “with a slightly different atmosphere from that of the manga” according to Netflix: Park Hyeong-seok is a high school student alone, marginalized and stigmatized for his body. One day like any other, he wakes up in a whole new carnal envelope that brings success: he provokes the attraction of his female comrades as much as the jealousy of his male comrades. Something that does not last forever since he wakes up in his first body the next day, before finding his body of Apollo. And so on.
Like the original webtoon (Tae-Jun Park, editor’s note), the plot of the animated series LOOKISM also evokes the subtle cult of appearance and the materialism that mark the daily life of our modern society.
Themes therefore very different from classic successful anime. Studio Mir (The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, DotA: Dragon’s Blood) is in charge of the animation. Lookism is to be found on November 04, exclusively on Netflix.
