Google Maps is such a complete application that in most cases we don’t even fully exploit its potential. After all, the features are many. However, some of them should not be forgotten. So we’re going to tell you six things you have to do right now in the Google Maps app.
Google Maps: six things you have to do right now in this app
1. Avoid tolls
With prices always on the rise, some people sometimes avoid the highways in order to save a little. So you can use Google Maps for this purpose. As such, you can go to work, always avoiding toll roads. Who knows, maybe even discover a really good alternative route!
However, it is also possible to avoid highways. It is true that they are often the quickest and most direct way to travel. However, sometimes we want to avoid them. That said, there’s a simple option on Google Maps to avoid highways (and tolls). Once the option is activated, Google will recommend a route to avoid these roads. It’s much easier than trying to do it yourself.
That said, go to Google Maps settings. To do this click on your profile picture and click where it says Navigation Settings.
Then activate the Avoid Highways option. And from that moment on you will no longer find them.
2. Avoid unnecessary fines
Google Maps alerts us to the existence of speed cameras and allows us to avoid unnecessary fines. In addition, while traveling on a certain road, it always tells us what the maximum speed is.
3. Share location
Sometimes on the way to work we may want to share our location with someone. This even for someone who is waiting for us, to know exactly when we arrive.
This Google Maps function works very well and even has interesting details. For example, we can define how long we want this sharing to take place. And don’t worry because the operation is even simple.
First, open Google Maps. Then click on your profile picture in the right corner. Then click on the share location option.
At that point, a screen appears that explains how this function works. Especially if it’s the first time. To proceed, click on Share location.
Then we can immediately indicate the people with whom we want to share our location. Initially, the app shows people with a Google account with whom we interact the most. However, we can share this with anyone on our contact list.
To do this, just click on more options.
However, as I mentioned above, we can also define the time that this sharing will last. So we can use the plus and minus buttons to set the time the sharing lasts or we can choose to always leave it on. At least until we turn it off manually.
4. Save and organize favorites
First start by opening Google Maps.
Then find a place you want to save in your favorite places list.
Then, after locating the place you want to add, just move the labels to the side below the title of the place until you find the Save option. Then we have to press Save.
Next we have the option to Save to a list. As a base, Google Maps already comes with some sections created, namely Favorites, Starred Places, I want to visit or Travel Plans. However, we can also create our own lists. For example, Good Restaurants, Places to Avoid and so on.
If you want to create your own list, just press the + button. Then give the list a name. Then you can add a description too.
However, it is possible to create a private, shared or public list. The last two options are interesting if you want other people to have access to the list.
Then just click on Create and you’re done.
5. Create custom maps
Now if you are on the computer you will have to visit this link.
Then click on Create a new map.
In the new window, however, you will have to give the map a name by clicking on Untitled map. Then you will see that roughly in the middle and below the search box you have several options.
One of them is to place the famous pins to identify places. So, click there to add the pin to a certain zone. Then put a description. When done, click on Save. This “layer” that corresponds to one of the points will appear on the left side of the screen.
You can customize the pin you have placed in a very simple way. Change the color, add tags, whatever makes sense to make it easier to identify. You can also use icons to indicate what kind of place it is.
6. Save parking spot
This is a very useful feature for those who often forget where they parked their vehicle. However, no one is free from this happening.
Very useful, this function is available in just a few taps.
Open Google Maps for Android and press the blue location button available in the lower right corner. You will see a blue dot in the center of the screen. Click on that blue dot and choose the Save parking spot option.
That way you’ll never forget where your car stopped.
It’s really worth making these changes in the Google Maps app.
