A film gets slammed by critics… and gets a hit on Netflix!
Netflix is a hit with its film The School of Good and Evil. This film, which was to be the start of a frankness “à la Harry Potter” is however one of the worst rated in the history of the platform …
Opinions, everyone has one (and can express it)
Today, there are opinions everywhere. Thanks to the Internet, you are very often offered give a rating out of 20, out of five stars, a percentageetc. This applies to Servicesof course, but also for cultural products. Our site, for example, allows you to rate and give a written opinion on games. Cinema has been doing this for a very long time: press reviews first, and now user reviews on the Internet, often give an idea of what others thought of a film. But does this have a real impact on success? It doesn’t really seem like that…
Films slammed by critics, but doing well in theaters
In recent years, we have seen films that have been critically acclaimed and yet achieve impressive box office numbers. Jurassic Worldfor example, has a average rating of 2.3 / 5 on AlloCinébelow average therefore, and yet it is the seventh-highest-grossing box office of all time. Already in 2011, Transformers 3 achieved a pitiful score of 35% on average on the press review side on the Rotten Tomatoes aggregator, but counted $1.123 billion in revenue. Netflix and its new film seem to follow this voice.
The School of Good and Evil has an average score of 37% on Rotten Tomatoes on the press side, and 68% on the public side. If the rating of the public is honorable, even if not flamboyant, that of the press is clearly low. On Twitter, the film was quickly labeled a “monumental turnip”, film “too cheap”, “zero and bottomless”etc … If the defenders of the film are also present on the social network, such polarized opinions did not suggest one thing: this adaptation of Soman Chainani’s novel is second in the ranking of the most viewed films on Netflix in France today, and number one in the world with nearly 79 million hours viewed.
If we observe the top most watched movies on netflix Since the launch of the platform, we find the same pattern: Red Notice, The Gray Man or even Don’t Look Upachieve respective scores on Rotten Tomatoes of “only” 36 %, 46 % et 56 %. However, these are undeniable successes on the platform. Only The Irishmana film with a duration of 3 h 29realized by Scorsese with De Niro, Pacino and Pesci and released on Netflix in 2019 seems to be unanimous: great success on the platformit counts a 95% rating from the press sur Rotten Tomatoes.
Further proof that the pitch of a film, sound castingthe promotion, the type of target audience … them there are many factors for successand the opinion of others seems ultimately to have little importance.
A School for Good and Evil is available now on Netflix.
