A marriage between two worlds
Five years after the release of Mario + The Rabbids Kingdom Battle, we invite you to discover the development of the new opus Sparks of Hope. The studios’ challenge was to make Ubisoft’s best Mario game. The teams of Paris and of Milan are the leaders of the project and work hand in hand under the gaze of Nintendo, which must validate the decisions as the creation of this second volume of this saga progresses. Xavier Manzanarès, the producer, also explains the relationship of trust between Nintendo and Ubisoft, the goal of which is to innovate in order to offer an experience full of creativity for these
A union full of challenges
The development of a video game is complex, several poles of teams work simultaneously on the various stages which constitute the program. They are about four hundred to have collaborated on this episode, and this, in the four corners of the world. Here, Ubisoft preserves the essence of Super Mario Galaxy, with a different game dynamic, thanks in particular to the evolution of the combat system. The clashes are now more intense and more strategic than ever.
Freedom of combat movement was our most ambitious project, several prototypes were necessary and it was really not easy until we had a click. We created a new type of game and gave players a reason to come back and play it. – David Soliani, creative director.
The 2D artists, who are responsible for transcribing the scriptwriters’ vision, wanted to create the Luma-Crétins (creatures of importance in the game), alongside a Princess Harmony (the famous Nintendo character) caricatured in the guise of a lazy character. 3D artists, on the other hand, tried to create an inspired artistic direction through illustrated books and paintings. Finally, the soundtrack is signed by three composers recognized in the world of video games: Grant Kirkhope (already present on the last Mario + The Rabbids), Gareth Coker (Minecraft) and Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy…). Everything was performed and recorded in Japan.
The team plans to focus next on three DLCs that will arrive later, with new planets and potentially the return of Rayman!
