The Internet helps in many processes. However, in others it even complicates. Whenever a baby is born quickly, the joy of birth is haunted by a series of bureaucracies that apparently are even easy to deal with. The problem is when it goes wrong. For example, Social Security has an automatic system that allows us to schedule parental leave days. In the case of the Mother everything works well. In the case of Father and due to a system error confirmed by an employee of Mon. of the Leiria District Center there is effectively a failure. In practice, when the birth occurs, the father, if he wants to take everything in a row, can enjoy 25 working days, five of which are optional. This is the case in the normal situations of the parenting allowance in which the Father for some reason does not take the mother’s leave.
That said, we have the Father’s exclusive period which is five days after birth, we have 15 days of the first month and then the optional five days.
If until very recently it was very complicated to make this appointment, Social Security has made the system much easier and allows us to do everything online without major complications. In fact, if we choose the dates wrong, it even alerts us and doesn’t let us choose those days. Now if this had everything to go well, it ends up generating a big problem at the same time.
In the case of the mother, everything is marked in a very simple way and without errors because they are consecutive days. In other words, not only the working days count. In the case of the Father, however, everything is different. The 25 days to which we are entitled are working days. As such the system has to mark them that way. The problem is, you’re not ready for that. If we try, we will not succeed and in practice we end up being entitled to fewer days.
As for the speed with which the scheduling of the days is made and even the payment to which we are entitled, nothing to say. Fast enough. This is a very positive point. The problem is that when this error occurs it becomes quite complicated to resolve. Still I will explain what must be done.
When we catch the error with assigning days
If we call Social Security to report what happened, a video call will be scheduled for which we have to wait about two weeks and then we realize that nothing happens.
That’s exactly what happened to me. I’m from Lisbon, they called me from Leiria and no matter how good they were in solving the problem, they couldn’t do anything to correct it.
So all we can do is send an email to the District Center in our area to explain what happened. The big question is that all of this takes a long time and the answer is slow to arrive. In the meantime, technically, we already have to report to work due to the fact that the days have passed and are not useful.
Then it’s a real imbroglio and as long as Social Security doesn’t answer us, which takes a long time, our hands and feet are tied. Eventually we can go back to work and ask for those days later or else we miss the other days we are entitled to. However this is no solution.
